  • Description:

Solidago canadensis is a herbaceous perennial native to north-eastern and north-central North America. It has adapted and spread to most of sub-polar North America, Europe, and Asia – where it is considered an invasive species, due to its allelopathic efforts on native vegetation and fauna. Long thought to stimulate allergic reactions, the pollen of S. canadensis is too heavy to be carried by the wind and therefore is likely, not allergenic. It is noted for its long creeping rhizomes, showy golden yellow florets, and usefulness as a dye in dry flower arrangements. First Nations’ people used Goldenrod to relieve sore throats and general pain.

  • Other: Goldenrods may require staking in locations where they aren't sheltered from the wind. They must be divided every 3-4 years as the clumps may easily overgrow their locations. Goldenrod may require one application of bone meal in the spring to prevent the plants from spreading too quickly.
