The Winner

The winner is Echoes of Spring by Lynne S. This fantastic piece got the most votes both from popular voting and the expert panel.

Echoes of Spring

A bed of edible greens and spring bulbs represent the awakening of spring and the quiet beauty of natures renewal.
A true spring planter should awaken the senses with aroma and encourage touch with texture hence the use of pussy willow.
The soil will be from a past project just adding in some fresh compost reflecting the principles of the circular economy where nothing goes to waste.
Everything used is something I already have or has been foraged for. The goal is to spend little to no money showing how things can be created with some ingenuity.

Lily & Peppa’s Garden Picnic

Lily & Peppa’s Garden Picnic is a fun, eco-friendly creation by a mother-daughter duo, starring a broken Peppa Pigmug turned planter. The container is filled with sweet strawberries grown from last year’s runners, green onions sprouted from kitchen scraps, and herbs we started from seed during the snowy months—all proof that food waste can become food again, and that greens taste even better when you grow them yourself! With every container reused and every plant telling a story, this picnic scene shows how kids can be part of a circular economy—reducing waste, reusing what we have, and growing something tasty. It’s a garden, a lesson, and a little adventure with Peppa, all packed into one tiny, joyful space.

Lady Bug RainBoot Planter

I have taken my favourite gardening rubber boots that got holes in them and “upcycled” them to create a planter. Ipainted them to look like ladybugs. I drilled holes in the bottom of the boots for drainage, added some gravel forstability, and place either herbs and/or resprouted onions or celery instead of composting the ends inside the boots.Instead of discarding the root ends, they get replanted and provide a wee bit more to feast on. With these boots, weare taking a step in the right direction towards sustainability!

Third Time’s a Charm

When I first moved back from the UK in 1994, I went to garage sales to get some plants and pots. The container I am using, was pressed into service in my own home or a friend’s home since then. At one point I gifted it with plants to our new neighbour, but when she moved to Vancouver, the container was left behind and has languished outside the garage next door for several years, so I am reclaiming it for this challenge, and have added some appropriate recycled and southwestern elements, to suit. I did a major tidy of my potting shed last summer during the water restrictions, and discovered a large number of recycled knives that I use for weeding our tap roots, so I added a peacock tail of reclaimed weeding knives to the planter.
