Contribute to the Society’s 2023 Calendar!
For 2023, we’re featuring the Society’s Perennial Plant of the Year (PPOY) and Bulb of the Year plants.
Do you have one of the PPOY plants growing in your garden putting on a fabulous show? Or, do you have a perennial that has been amazing year-after-year that you think should be a PPOY? Submit your photos and tell us why this is a must-have plant for your garden. Share key growing tips, too.
Perennial Plant of the Year and Bulb of the Year.
Visit the Perennial Plant of the Year page under the Resources menu of our website. Information about the plants are listed.
The plants selected for Bulb of the Year also have a webpage under Resources. Bulbs had been included in the PPOY, but now are a separate selection.
Selecting a Plant or Bulb of the Year
The volunteers that form the selection committee are gardeners, growers, garden centre staff, and keen plant people. Committee members nominate plants, debate their merits, and then come to an unanimous agreement on the winner.
Plants that are selected for this honour must be:
- suitable and reliable in Calgary growing conditions
- not overused
- readily available in garden centres
- reasonably affordable to purchase
The Society has been awarding the designation annually since to 2008 (There are PPOY prior to 2008, but that is the first year we have a date clearly tied to the plant).
