Volunteer Opportunities
Come share your skills and grow your passion and knowledge for gardening by volunteering with the Society! The Society is always looking for new volunteers to assist with events and programs. Current volunteer opportunities include.
Calgary Stampede Volunteers July 8 to 18 Take out your cowboy hat, put on your gardening gloves, and join us at the Calgary Stampede!! The Calgary Horticultural Society is hosting the 'Rooted in the City' Greenhouse - July 8 to 18.
Volunteers are needed to: Talk vegetable gardening with the public and demonstrate simple techniques including: how to prepare the soil, start seeds, transplant, thin, select plants, and water, and promote the Society by providing information and selling memberships. Training will be provided.
When: the Stampede Runs from July 8 (evening) through to Sunday July 18. The greenhouse will be open City Greenhouse will operated from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. There will be three 4.5-hour shifts each day: Morning - 8:45 am to 1:15 pm - Afternoon - 1:00 pm to 5:15 pm and Evening- 5:00 pm to 9:15pm. You will receive a free one-day pass to the Stampede. Spaces are filling up so contact us asap.
Gate Sitters for the Garden Competition. Saturday and Sunday July 24-25, A Gate Sitter spends a morning or afternoon shift at one of the winning gardens. The role involves: welcoming visitors to the garden and checking passports, providing information and directionm, monitoring a draw box and tallying some information.
Shifts are from 9:45 to 1:00 in the morning and 12:45 to 4:00 in the afternoon. All information needed will be provided. You will receive a free one-day pass to view the winning gardens and have the chance to come out and enjoy some time in these special gardens .If you can help as a Gate Sitter during the weekend of July 25 and 26, Contact Colleen with information about your preferences for: 1) Day -Saturday/Sunday 2) Shift -morning/afternoon, or whether you can be fllexible, and the 3) Quadrant of the city that works best for you.
Garden Mentors are needed to assist new gardeners in the Community Gardens Program. If you have an interest and expertise in starting seeds, transplanting, thinning, composting, sustainable gardening practises and harvesting, and enjoy chatting with people this might be a fun position for you. Requests for helping new gardeners increase during the planting season. If you enjoy meeting gardeners, have a way for mentoring and have a few tricks up your sleeve in the gardening department, you would enjoy this important position.
Community Gardens Office Assistance –There are a variety of tasks available to support this program, from labelling, calling, spell checking, and digging outside in the garden and through the files in the office. If you have some time to assist with this busy program, please give us a call.
Bus Tours.
Each year a number of bus tours are arranged for members. We are looking for volunteers to work on a committee to develop new ideas for the program next season (2011). This will involve sitting down with a a small group, brainstorming and researching new ideas. Assistance will be provided to support this group build the program.
Coordinators are also needed for each trip. This task involves checking lists, counting heads, watching the time, and generally ensuring that fun is had by all. If you enjoy taking these relaxing trips, perhaps you would like to be a coordinator.
Newsletter. Do you have superior writing skills? Do you enjoy researching and writing about gardening topics relevant to Calgary gardeners? The Society newsletter articles are written by volunteers, and we are always seeking new writers. Add your voice to Calgary Gardening.
Speakers Bureau. The Society is often asked to provide speakers for community groups on a variety of gardening topics. These talks are offered free of charge, and volunteers are needed to fill the requests. If you are knowledgeable about gardening in Calgary and comfortable speaking to small groups, this may be a great opportunity for you.
