Waterwise Gardening

Over the past few years a continued lack of precipitation in Alberta has created drought conditions. Our gardens, public parks and green spaces have suffered from this extended hot, dry weather and have caused the City of Calgary to restrict watering on a number of occasions.

Recognizing that a change in approach could help Calgary gardens adapt to these harsh conditions, The Calgary Horticultural Society collaborated with the City of Calgary Integrated Pest Management to design and construct a demonstration garden which illustrates water-wise gardening techniques.  With the help of many hard-working volunteers the first Water-Wise garden was installed in the summer of 2002. This Silver Springs site is no longer open as a demonstration garden.

The Society would like to thank all those homeowners who submitted their property as a potential site for the new Water Wise Garden.  The new site has been chosen and the design process is underway.  Planting of the garden will take place early in the fall, and next spring.  Watch this page for updates on the new location!
