Local bookstores and libraries are crammed with beautiful and inspiring books and magazines on every conceivable aspect of gardening. They are a wonderful source of ideas and identification, but be aware that the writers are often from Eastern and Western Canada, USA and Britain where weather and conditions are very different from those we deal with in the Chinook belt.
With this in mind we have put together some recommended titles well suited to Calgary and the Prairies, including of course our own newsletter/magazine Calgary Gardener, which is published eight times a year and is free with every membership.
Society Library
Located in the office of the Calgary Horticultural Society, the library offers members a veritable treasure of information and ideas.
Currently the collection consists of about 360 volumes and a limited number of videos. Some of the books are designated “Reference” but the majority are there for loan. The library subscribes to six magazines including “Gardener for the Prairies” and the Royal Horticultural Society’s journal “The Garden”.
Magazines can be borrowed except for the current issues. All materials are available to Society members whether on a loan basis or for browsing at the office.
