Gardening Resources

This section will show you the basics - gardening is not impossible here - just a little different: Calgary's climate is nothing if not unpredictable - heavy, wet snowfalls in May, devastating hail in mid-summer and temperatures suddenly rising to well above freezing when a Chinook hits in the depth of winter.

Add to this a short growing season - an average of only 112 frost-free days, little rainfall and naturally alkaline soil and water and it is clear we need to know a few techniques to create a beautiful and healthy garden.

The Calgary Horticultural Society knows how! And the news is not all bad - Calgary's bright sunshine and cool nights actually make for brighter coloured flowers and sweeter vegetables!
